Two formats of competition

Open play and handicap play are not the same match.

NON-HANDICAP / OPEN

BCA/CSI and world-rules lane

Use WPA/WNT/CSI event rules. Both players race to the same number of racks; event rules determine break box, rack template, push-out, and early-9 handling.

HANDICAP / RATED

APA or local handicap lane

APA 9-Ball is points-based. Every legally pocketed object ball has point value in the match score, and the target points depend on skill levels. Other events may instead spot games in the race.

APA has an established national 9-Ball points-handicap format and World Championship.

Step-by-step match flow

Play the rack from start to finish.

  1. Step 1.Confirm rack, break box, break order, 9-on-the-break treatment, and push-out rule.
  2. Step 2.Make a legal break and evaluate the lowest-ball path before shooting quickly.
  3. Step 3.Use a push-out only when the incoming layout offers no acceptable shot or safety.
  4. Step 4.Plan in three-ball patterns: current ball, next ball, and landing zone for the following ball.
  5. Step 5.When the runout breaks down, play a two-way shot or lock-up safety.
  6. Step 6.Record balls/points correctly in handicap play and racks in open play.
