Two formats of competition

Open play and handicap play are not the same match.

NON-HANDICAP / OPEN

BCA/CSI and world-rules lane

Use WPA or CSI rules. Both players race to the same number of games. BCA Pool League play commonly uses CSI rules, but some BCA/CSI events also offer Fargo-rated divisions.

HANDICAP / RATED

APA or local handicap lane

APA 8-Ball uses skill levels and the Equalizer system: the higher-skilled player must win more games. Team formats also use skill-level limits such as the 23-Rule.

APA has an established national 8-Ball handicap format and world championship route.

Step-by-step match flow

Play the rack from start to finish.

  1. Step 1.Lag or determine the first break; confirm alternate or winner break.
  2. Step 2.Rack according to the event guide and complete a legal break.
  3. Step 3.Establish groups under the controlling rules; do not assume a group merely because one ball fell.
  4. Step 4.Build a pattern that solves clusters early and preserves a key ball for position on the 8.
  5. Step 5.Use safety play when the runout is not high percentage.
  6. Step 6.Call the 8-ball pocket clearly, complete the legal shot, and record the game.
