Guild rule: Protection should buy and loot by role stats first, not item level alone. If an item has dead stats for the role, treat it as temporary even if the item level is higher.
A-to-Z Roadmap
From starting heirlooms to Ulduar-ready hero.
Use this order so guild members do not waste emblems, raid tokens, gems, enchants, or gold on the wrong item lane.
1. Heirlooms
Buy XP shoulders and chest first, then weapon and trinkets. Use the correct armor archetype for the role.
2. Leveling
Level in DPS-friendly heirlooms for speed, but keep a shield/tank set for dungeons if you are tanking. Do not chase defense while quest leveling; solve raid crit safety at level 80.
3. Fresh 80 audit
Open the character sheet, check role caps, remove dead-stat items, and replace heirlooms with heroic/crafted/rep/AH pieces.
4. Baseline buys
Use Dalaran emblem vendors for starter trinkets, relics, rings, cloaks, belts, and T8 head/chest tokens.
5. Ulduar path
Farm Ulduar 25 for T8 hands, legs, shoulders, key weapons, trinkets, and off-pieces. Use scaling, but still respect mechanics.
6. Hero audit
Finish gems, enchants, belt buckle, consumables, role trinkets, and a clean next-upgrade plan before loot requests.
Part 1
Heirlooms and leveling plan.
Protection and Holy usually level faster in plate Strength DPS heirlooms, then swap into tank or healer gear at 80. Ret stays plate Strength. Leveling heirlooms: plate STR DPS for leveling; 1H+shield for tank dungeons
Buy order
- XP shoulders + XP chest first for the biggest leveling value.
- Weapon suited to the spec second; weapons are huge for melee and Hunter leveling.
- Two heirloom trinkets after the XP pieces and weapon.
- Correct armor archetype: do not buy caster pieces for physical DPS, and do not buy tank gear just to quest faster.
- Use old-world heirloom enchants; many BC/WotLK enchants have level requirements and may not apply.
Leveling rule

When to replace
Keep heirlooms while leveling unless a quest, dungeon, crafted, or vendor piece clearly gives better role stats. At 80, replace heirlooms immediately with blues/epics that help your caps and role package.

- Useful for alternate weapons and trinkets if Dalaran lacks your item.

Leveling caution: Do not spend endgame gems or expensive WotLK enchants on leveling greens. Save gold and mats for the level 80 set.
Part 2
Stats, caps, and dead-stat audit.
Caps and survival checks come before throughput. Once a cap is solved, stop overpaying for that rating and return to the spec's main role stats.

Character-sheet check: Re-check caps after every token turn-in, weapon swap, trinket swap, gem change, or enchant change. The final value depends on talents, racials, buffs, food, gems, and enchants.

Fresh level 80 first-day setup.
The first hour at level 80 determines whether the character feels useful or underbuilt. Follow the universal route first, then apply the spec-specific first moves.

Your first level 80 moves
- Buy T8 chest/head tokens.
- Use tank shield/1H and tank trinkets.

Starter spending rule
Do not buy a shiny item just because it is available. Buy items that fix caps, complete T8 2-piece/4-piece, supply role trinkets/relics, or replace dead-stat pieces.

Token family
- Wayward Conqueror: Paladin, Priest, Warlock
- Chest + Head can be bought with Emblems of Conquest when the vendor is active.
- Hands, Legs, and Shoulders are farmed in Ulduar 25.
Turn-in procedure
- Go to Dalaran - Magus Commerce Exchange.
- Talk to Dubin Clay.
- Choose the Tank version for Protection, not another role version.
- Ask in guild chat before accepting if the item name looks wrong.
Hero path for this spec
- T8 tank pieces.
- Ulduar tank shield/weapon.
- Hard-mode survival trinkets.
Wrong-token warning: When you turn in tokens, select the item for your actual role. DPS, tank, and healer names can be different even when the token family is the same.
Part 5
Gems, enchants, belt buckle, and consumables.
Consumables, gems, enchants, and a belt buckle are often a larger practical upgrade than a small item-level swap. Finish these before asking for loot help.
