*A TheraWoW WotLK Oculus guide covering the full Band of Variance to Ley-Guardian Eregos route, drake roles, boss order, and final fight strategy.*

The Oculus is one of the most misunderstood dungeons in Wrath of the Lich King. It is not hard because the bosses are impossible. It is hard because groups get lost, skip the wrong platforms, forget to talk to the friendly NPCs, or reach Ley-Guardian Eregos without understanding their drake roles.

This guide is written as a quick raid-leader style checklist for a 5-player dungeon. Follow the route, talk to Image of Belgaristrasz or the friendly NPCs after each boss, assign drake jobs before Eregos, and The Oculus becomes much cleaner.

Full route at a glance

Use this as the complete dungeon route:

  • Band of Variance
  • Drakos the Interrogator
  • Drake pickup
  • Band of Acceleration
  • Centrifuge Construct platforms
  • Varos Cloudstrider
  • Urom chase platforms
  • Mage-Lord Urom
  • Ley-Guardian Eregos

The core rule is simple: after each boss, talk to Image of Belgaristrasz or the friendly NPC before moving on. This keeps the quest chain, drake progress, and dungeon route moving correctly.

Start at Band of Variance

The run starts on foot at Band of Variance. Group up before pulling, clear the trash around the first ring, and move together toward Drakos the Interrogator.

Do not worry about drake choices yet. Drakos is fought on foot, and your group gets drake essences only after he dies.

Drakos the Interrogator

Drakos is the first boss.

The tank should hold Drakos near the middle so everyone can see the floating Unstable Spheres. These spheres move around and explode, so players need to stay aware and avoid them.

When Drakos uses Magic Pull, everyone gets dragged to him. As soon as the pull happens, run back out and spread.

Simple party callout:

  • Avoid spheres.
  • After Magic Pull, run out and spread.
  • Kill Drakos, then talk to the NPC.

After Drakos dies, talk to Belgaristrasz, Image of Belgaristrasz, or the friendly rescued NPCs that appear. Then choose your drake essence.

Drake roles

The standard Oculus setup is:

  • 1 Ruby Drake
  • 1 Emerald Drake
  • 3 Amber Drakes

Ruby is the tank drake. Ruby starts Eregos, holds threat, uses defensive tools when needed, and picks up whelps.

Emerald is the healer drake. Emerald keeps the Ruby and the rest of the group alive.

Amber is the DPS and control drake. Amber builds damage with Temporal Rift, uses Shock Lance for damage, and rotates Stop Time during Ley-Guardian Eregos.

Normal flying mounts are not the correct vehicle for this dungeon. Use the Ruby, Emerald, or Amber essence from your bags or action bar to summon your Oculus drake.

Some drake abilities may appear later as dungeon progress continues. Keep talking to Image of Belgaristrasz or the friendly NPC after each boss so the run stays on track.

Move to Band of Acceleration

Once everyone confirms they have a drake, fly upward and outward from the Drakos level to the next ring of platforms: Band of Acceleration.

Look for platforms with Centrifuge Constructs and blue-dragon trash. Land before engaging on-foot trash unless your group specifically wants to handle airborne enemies while mounted.

The group should not fly straight to the top. Varos is next, but the construct platforms must be handled first.

Clear the Centrifuge Constructs

Before Varos, clear the construct platforms on Band of Acceleration.

The pattern is:

  • Fly to a construct platform.
  • Land and dismount.
  • Clear the enemies.
  • Destroy the Centrifuge Constructs.
  • Remount and repeat until all required constructs are done.

Simple party callout:

  • Land on construct platforms.
  • Dismount.
  • Kill trash and constructs.
  • Do not pull Varos until constructs are done.

Varos Cloudstrider

Varos is fought on foot in the middle of his platform.

The tank should hold him near the center so the group has space to move. Everyone should watch for beam paths. A warning beam shows the direction, then the harmful beam follows.

If a quarter or section of the platform lights up with dangerous energy, move to a safe section immediately.

Simple party callout:

  • Tank middle.
  • Move out of beam paths.
  • If your platform section lights up, move.
  • After Varos dies, talk to Image of Belgaristrasz and remount.

Mage-Lord Urom chase

After Varos dies, talk to Image of Belgaristrasz, mount your drake again, and fly upward toward the next set of small outer platforms.

Do not skip to the top or fly straight to Eregos. Mage-Lord Urom is the third boss.

Urom does not stay and fight immediately. He appears, teleports away, and leaves add packs behind. Treat each stop as a mini-clear.

The pattern is:

  • Land where Urom appears.
  • Dismount.
  • Let him teleport away.
  • Kill the adds.
  • Remount.
  • Follow him to the next platform.

Repeat this until Urom moves to the center platform for the real boss fight.

Simple party callout:

  • Land.
  • Dismount.
  • Kill adds.
  • Remount.
  • Follow Urom until he goes center.

Mage-Lord Urom

Mage-Lord Urom is fought on foot after the chase sequence.

Move the boss and players out of Frostbomb zones. Heal or top off the player affected by Time Bomb before it detonates.

The most important mechanic is Empowered Arcane Explosion. When Urom teleports to the middle and starts the big cast, hide behind a pillar or wall to break line of sight. Do not try to heal through it.

Simple party callout:

  • Move out of Frostbomb.
  • Heal Time Bomb.
  • When Urom teleports middle, hide behind a pillar.
  • After Urom dies, talk to Image of Belgaristrasz again and mount for Eregos.

Ley-Guardian Eregos

Ley-Guardian Eregos is the true drake fight. Everyone should be mounted before the pull.

Before starting, confirm:

  • Ruby is pulling.
  • Emerald is ready to heal.
  • Amber players have a Stop Time order.
  • Everyone knows to fly away during Planar Shift.

The standard setup is still 1 Ruby, 1 Emerald, and 3 Amber.

Ruby should pull with Searing Wrath, hold threat, use defensive tools when available, and pick up whelps.

Emerald should maintain healing and keep the Ruby and group alive.

Amber should build charges with Temporal Rift, use Shock Lance for damage, and use Stop Time only when assigned.

Eregos mechanics

Enraged Assault is handled by Amber Stop Time. Do not have every Amber press Stop Time at once. Assign a simple order before the pull.

Example:

  • Amber 1 uses Stop Time on the first Enraged Assault.
  • Amber 2 uses Stop Time on the second Enraged Assault.
  • Amber 3 uses Stop Time on the third Enraged Assault.
  • Repeat as cooldowns allow.

During Planar Shift, Eregos becomes immune and summons dangerous anomalies or orbs. Fly away in a wide circle until the phase ends, then return and re-engage.

Ruby should gather whelps when possible, and the group should help kill or control them so Emerald is not overwhelmed.

Simple party callout:

  • Mounted only.
  • Ruby pulls.
  • Amber Stop Time order on Enraged Assault.
  • During Planar Shift, fly away from the chasing orbs.
  • Return when Eregos is active again.

Fast troubleshooting

If someone cannot fly, make sure they used the Ruby, Emerald, or Amber essence item from their bags or bar. Regular flying mounts are not the intended vehicle inside The Oculus.

If someone missed their drake, go back to the NPC after Drakos or the latest Image of Belgaristrasz and have them choose and use an essence.

If Varos feels blocked or the path feels wrong, go back around Band of Acceleration and finish the Centrifuge Construct platforms.

If Urom keeps disappearing, that is normal. Land where he was, kill the adds, remount, and follow him to the next platform.

If the group dies to Urom, the usual mistake is failing to line-of-sight Empowered Arcane Explosion. Hide behind a pillar or wall every time.

If the group dies to Eregos, assign Amber Stop Time properly and make everyone fly away during Planar Shift anomalies.

If the quest tracker points somewhere strange, ignore unrelated quest tracker objectives while inside the dungeon. Follow the boss route in this guide.

Copy-and-paste party callouts

Use these in party chat:

  • Oculus route: Drakos -> drakes -> constructs -> Varos -> Urom platforms -> Urom center -> Eregos.
  • Drakos: avoid spheres. After Magic Pull, run out and spread.
  • Pick drakes: 1 Ruby tank, 1 Emerald healer, 3 Amber DPS/control if possible.
  • Construct platforms first. Land, dismount, kill trash and constructs, then Varos.
  • Varos: tank middle, move out of beam paths and lit platform sections.
  • Urom chase: land, kill adds, remount, follow him.
  • Urom boss: hide behind a pillar for Arcane Explosion.
  • Eregos: mounted. Amber Stop Time order on Enraged Assault. Fly away during Planar Shift orbs.

One-page run card

Use this short version when leading a fast guild run:

  • Band of Variance: clear first ring trash and reach Drakos.
  • Drakos: kill on foot. Avoid spheres and spread after Magic Pull.
  • After Drakos: talk to Belgaristrasz or the friendly NPCs, pick a drake essence, and summon your drake.
  • Fly up to Band of Acceleration.
  • Constructs: land on construct platforms, dismount, clear trash, and destroy all required Centrifuge Constructs.
  • Varos: kill on foot. Move out of beams and dangerous platform sections.
  • After Varos: talk to Image of Belgaristrasz, remount, and fly up to Urom.
  • Urom chase: land, dismount, kill adds, remount, and follow. Repeat until the center fight.
  • Urom boss: move from Frostbomb, heal Time Bomb, and hide behind a pillar for Empowered Arcane Explosion.
  • After Urom: talk to Image of Belgaristrasz and mount for Eregos.
  • Eregos: Ruby tanks, Emerald heals, Amber DPS/control. Stop Time Enraged Assault and fly away during Planar Shift anomalies.
  • Finish: loot Eregos and turn in any dungeon quests before leaving.

Final thoughts

The Oculus becomes much easier when the group treats it like a route check instead of a random flying dungeon. Stay together, talk to the NPCs after each boss, clear the correct platforms, and assign drake jobs before Eregos.

For Syndicate runs, the clean setup is one Ruby, one Emerald, and three Amber drakes. That gives the group a clear tank, healer, and DPS/control structure for the final fight.

When lost, find the latest Image of Belgaristrasz or friendly NPC and follow the ring upward: Drakos level, construct and Varos level, Urom platforms, then Eregos.

Learn the route once, and The Oculus turns from a confusing dungeon into a fast, organized WotLK clear.
